The name ‘Flying Flea’ returned to Royal Enfield’s lineup on Monday night after a gap of 75 years. The brand, which was a matter of pride for the 123-year-old company during World War II, is set to reappear in a new avatar in 2025 as the company’s first electric vehicle (EV).
The move is likely to infuse new life and boost competition in the EV motorcycle category, which has struggled to gain momentum with only 11,000 to 11,500 vehicle sales in 2023. A special space will be created to manufacture this model within the company’s manufacturing unit at Vallam Vadagal.
The Flying Flea brand is inspired by the original Royal Enfield Flying Flea motorcycle of the 1940s, a milestone in vehicle engineering and design. Although it was intended for use during the Second World War. Then they were dropped from above through parachutes to make them lightweight and easy to travel in all terrains. But later people adopted it in cities as well.
At present, the Revolt RV 400, Matter Area 5000, Oven Roar, Ola Roadster, Rapti T30 and Torque Kratos are the leading EV motorcycles in India. The lightness, speed and adaptability of this old model is returning with the Flying Flea model and its upcoming range of electric vehicles.
